The Human Rights Situation of the Akha people in Thailand
Chairperson:
My name is Matthew McDaniel. I and Michu have come to the UN Permanent
Forum many times, and also to the Working Group in Geneva in order to
speak up for the rights of the Akha people. Since 2004 we have seen little dialogue with the Thai Government and
little change in the situation of the Akha people in Thailand.
1. In 2008 the Akha case came to the attention of the Special
Rapporteur on the Rights and Fundamental Freedoms of Indigenous people:

Working with the United Nations Human Rights Programme: A Handbook for Civil Society is a new, user-friendly and authoritative publication on United Nations human rights bodies and mechanisms – explaining how they work and exploring the many important ways that civil society actors including NGOs can contribute to their work. This publication is addressed to the civil society actors who, every day in every part of the world, contribute to the promotion and protection of human rights, and it ultimately aims at enabling more people to access and make claim to their human rights through effective use of United Nations human rights bodies and mechanisms.

The Indigenous Fellowship Programme (IFP) was launched by the Office of
the
High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in the context of the
first
International Decade of the World's Indigenous Peoples
(1995/2004).
The aim of the programme is to give indigenous peoples
the opportunity to
gain knowledge on the UN system and mechanisms
dealing with human rights in
general and indigenous issues in
particular so they can assist their
organizations and communities in
protecting and promoting the rights of
their people. In its first
decade, more than 100 indigenous men and women
from 46 countries
undertook the programme. They provided human rights
training to many
more in their communities.

1. Jahrestag der Deklaration für die Rechte der Indigenen Völker |

We celebrate on 13 September 2008 the first anniversary of the
adoption by the United Nations of the Universal Declaration on the
Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
The adoption of the Declaration by the
United Nations, with an
overwhelming vote of support from the member
States, represents a
significant milestone in the promotion and
protection of universal
human rights.
The adoption of this
Declaration occurred at a critical time in the
new Millennium when the
role and effectiveness of the United Nations
was under intense
scrutiny.
For those of us who worked in the final negotiations for the
adoption
of the Declaration we were becoming acutely aware that the
era of
developing new standards was drawing to a close.
